Stolen from Gene’s blog, but I feel the same way and am way to tired to write!
Well over the past few months my little sister has been getting everything prepared to see where her residency lands her: Writing papers, sending emails, making calls, visiting schools… everything. With a list of a dozen schools ranging from Stanford and Cornell to UCLA and the University of Miami, yesterday was Match Day and the day that would pretty much set her immediate future.
Since we’re 3,000-plus miles away from the University of Miami campus where she’s been we were able to watch the live feed online. Neil, Collin and I were all set up at the house watching, my dad was streaming it down in Surinam, Mei and Kim were watching at work and an hour in and close to fifty students down it was her time. “Jo-Ann Tjin Kon Kiem” is announced and she’s on her way up. We’re all giddy to see what happens and as she’s making her way up to the podium the feed goes down. Wait, what?!
Neil and I are going insane, I’m running upstairs to see if it went down on my computer, as that’s happening my dad’s calling from South America to see if it was just him that lost the feed. Nope, EVERYONE watching the live feed lost it as she was walking up… really, UM, really?
So as soon as we figured out that we weren’t getting it back, we called my mom since she was there. Ring, ring, ring: no answer. Ring, ring, ring: still no answer. I ended up calling my little brother (who I was pretty sure would have been at school) but he answers. “She got it! UTSW!!!”
She was a match for the number one school that she had on her list, University of Texas Southwestern. She’ll be making the move to Dallas in June and she’ll be the best damn Pediatrician on the planet. Hands down.
Jo-Ann, I know I’ve said it a hundred times but I’m so incredibly proud of you and the things you’re doing and going to do!
